The importance of phonics games and activities-If youโve ever watched a student light up when a word finally clicks, you know just how powerful strong foundational skills can be. ๐ Thatโs why I want to talk a little about the magic that happens when we intentionally pair phonemic awareness and phonicsโespecially through simple, effective routines like the phonics games word chaining or word ladders.
Word chaining might look small, but it does big phonics work. When students change just one sound at a time (cat โ cap โ map โ mop), theyโre doing so much more than reading words. Theyโre learning to hear individual sounds, connect those sounds to letters, and blend them into real words. That back-and-forth between hearing and seeing is exactly what many struggling readers need to strengthen their decoding skills.
Hereโs what I love most about word chaining and similar activities:
- They build phonemic awareness and phonics at the same time (no extra blocks needed).
- They help students notice how words work, not just memorize them.
- Theyโre quick, structured, and easy to differentiate for small groups or intervention.
- They boost confidence because students experience lots of small wins in just a few minutes.
For our students who struggle with decoding, these routines provide the repeated, focused phonics practice that helps skills finally stick. And for our stronger readers, they deepen understanding of word patterns and spelling, which supports both fluency and writing.
If youโre already using word chaining, keep goingโyouโre giving your students exactly the kind of practice their brains need. And if itโs not part of your regular routine yet, this might be the perfect time to try adding it into your phonics or intervention block. Even 5โ10 minutes a day can make a real difference over time.
If youโd like a few ready-to-use word chaining and phonics activities to make planning easier, Iโve shared some of my favorite options that you can try right away. Take a look when you have a moment and see if one might fit into your small groups or whole-class routine.
You are doing such important work, and those small, intentional instructional choices truly add up for your students. Iโm cheering you on and canโt wait to keep sharing ideas that make literacy instruction both effective and manageable.
