Who is ready for an April Literacy Challenge? I know I am definitely ready for April and spring! We’ve picked some fun reading and writing activities to include this month for your students. If you missed the March Literacy Challenge and still want to get that one, you can find it here.
The April Literacy Challenge is digital and is designed to be flexible for where students complete it. Students can work on the activities at school for morning work, free time, literacy centers, and even at home if they wish. We like to get in as many fun literacy activities with our students as we can! The link is at the bottom of this post.
Since we are talking about digital literacy ideas, have you thought about strengthening your students’ fluency by using fluency phrases in a digital format? We spend a lot of time working with fluency phrases with students who need to build their fluency skills.
Getting students to read naturally in phrases is a big key to improving overall reading fluency. We all have those students that find it difficult to find the natural break in sentences or to read words chunked into phrases to help with meaning. These digital phrases activities definitely help with this and are fun!
Students uncover the phrase and use interactive digital pieces to mark the multisyllabic words. Then since only one phrase at at time is uncovered, the amount of text on the screen is not overwhelming to them. The reader then practices reading the phrase until they can do it smoothly and automatically.
Another activity after readers have worked on phrasing is to apply that skill to improve comprehension and vocabulary. Students gain confidence in their reading ability and this helps them improve their comprehension!
You can find these digital phrases and comprehension task cards broken into sets in our store:
Two Syllable Fluency Phrases & Comprehension
Three Syllable Fluency Phrases & Comprehension
Four Syllable Fluency Phrases & Comprehension
Five Syllable Fluency Phrases & Comprehension
You can sign up for our newsletter so you can be notified when new literacy challenges are posted. The April Literacy Challenge can be downloaded by clicking here. Just fill out the form to be given the link. It is perfectly fine to fill out the form even if you are already signed up. 😃

I really love these literacy challenges. Our kids are in cohorts this year so I have been posting them in Seesaw to do at home on their off school days. I also love the book lists. Our library is still closed so I’ve been spending too much money on books this year!
